Side Effects: Contact the veterinarian if the pet has bloody, black or tarry stools or blood in vomit as these symptoms could indicate serious side effects. If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Novox and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips; tongue or face; hives); muscle cramps, open sores in the mouth, rapid weight gain due to fluid retention; seizures, abdominal cramping. Toxicity of phenylbutazone has been investigated in rats and mice (11) and dogs (12). Phenylbutazone has been used by Camberos (13) in thoroughbred horses. Favorable results were reported in cases of traumatism, muscle rupture, strains and inflammations of the third phalanx. Results were not as favorable in the period treatment of osteoarthritis of the stifle and hip, arthrosis of the trapezious muscles and general arthritis. Prescription items are NON-RETURNABLE and NON REFUNDABLE Primor Indications For Use Primor is for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections (wounds and abscesses) in dogs caused by strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp., and Proteus mirabilis susceptible to sulfadimethoxine/ormetoprim. Description Primor is an antimicrobial drug containing sulfadimethoxine and ormetoprim in a 5 to 1 ratio. The combination of these 2 compounds results in the potentiation of sulfadimethoxine, providing increased efficacy, a broadened spectrum of activity to include some sulfonamide-resistant organisms, and reduction in the rate of resistance development. Sulfadimethoxine is a white, almost tasteless and odorless powder. Chemically, it is N1-(2,6-dimethoxy-4pyrimidinyl)-sulfanila-mide. The structural formula is: Ormetoprim is a white, almost tasteless powder. Chemically, it is 2,4-diamino-5-(4,5- dimethoxy-2methylbenzyl)-pyrimidine. The structural formula is: Toxicity And Safety 1 Toxicity data for Primor indicates that the drug is safe when used at the recommended dosage. Following oral administration of Primor to dogs at 27.5 mg/kg/day (12.5 mg/lb/day) for 8 weeks, no changes were noted in hematology, blood chemistry, urinalysis, gross pathology, and histopathology, except for elevated serum cholesterol, increased thyroid and liver weights, enlarged basophilic cells in the pituitary, and mild follicular thyroid hyperplasia. These changes are known to be associated with prolonged administration of sulfonamides to dogs and have been shown to be reversible. Adverse Reactions Conditions reported following use of sulfonamides or potentiated sulfonamides include polyarthritis, urticaria, facial swelling, fever, hemolytic anemia, polydypsia, polyuria, hepatitis, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, and neurologic disorders. In rare instances, neurologic signs including behavioral changes, ataxia, seizures, aggression, and hyperexcitability have been reported. Keratitis sicca, possibly due to prolonged use of sulfonamides, has been reported. Individual animal hypersensitivity may result in local or generalized reactions. Anaphylactoid reactions, although rare, may also occur. Antidote Epinephrine for anaphylactoid reactions. Precautions Decreased water consumption and aciduria enhance the probability of the formation of sulfonamide crystals in the urine. Monitoring urine samples for crystal formation is recommended from animals with acid urine receiving the drug. As with any sulfonamide therapy, make certain dogs maintain adequate water intake. If dogs show no improvement within 2 or 3 days, reevaluate the diagnosis. Safety in breeding dogs has not been established. Contraindications Primor should not be used in dogs showing marked liver parenchymal damage, blood dyscrasias, or in those with a history of sulfonamide hypersensitivity. Primor Dosage And Administration Administer an initial oral dose of 25 mg/lb (55 mg/kg) of body weight on the first day of treatment. Administer subsequent daily doses at the rate of 12.5 mg/lb (27.5 mg/kg) of body weight. Continue treatment for at least 2 days after remission of clinical signs. Do not extend treatment for more than 21 consecutive days. For optimal therapeutic effect: (1) the drug must be given early in the course of the disease; (2) therapeutically effective levels must be maintained in the body throughout the treatment period; (3) treatment should continue for at least 2 days after remission of clinical signs; and (4) the causative bacterial agents must be sensitive to the drug. Possible side effects attributable to phenothiazine derivatives include sedation; protruding nictitating membrane; blood dyscrasias; intensification and prolongation of the action of analgesics sedatives and general anesthetics; and potentiation of organophosphate toxicity and the activity of procaine hydrochloride. It should be remembered that the premonitory signs of cortisone overdosage such as sodium retention and edema may not occur with prednisolone. Therefore the veterinarians must be alert to detect less obvious side effects such as blood dyscrasias polydipsia and polyuria. The appearance and severity of side effects are dose related and are minimal at the recommended dosage level. If troublesome side effects are encountered the dosage of Temaril-P should be reduced and discontinued unless the severity of the condition being treated makes its relief paramount. Prolonged treatment with Temaril-P must be withdrawn gradually. Use of corticosteroids depending on dose duration and specific steroid may result in inhibition of endogenous steroid production following drug withdrawal. In patients presently receiving or recently withdrawn from systemic steroid treatments therapy with a rapidly acting corticosteroid should be considered in unusually stressful situations. WARNING: Clinical and experimental data have demonstrated that corticosteroids administered orally or by injection to animals may induce the first stage of parturition if used during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature parturition followed by dystocia fetal death retained placenta and metritis. Each mL of KETOFEN (ketoprofen) contains 100 mg of ketoprofen in an aqueous formulation containing: L-Arginine, 70 mg; citric acid (to adjust pH); benzyl alcohol, 0.025 g (as preservative). It is packaged in a multiple dose bottle. PHARMACOLOGY KETOFEN is a non-narcotic, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent with analgesic and antipyretic properties. TOXICITY Horses were found to tolerate ketoprofen given intravenously at dosages of 0, 1, 3 and 5 mg/lb once daily for 15 consecutive days (up to five times the recommended dosage for three times the usual duration) with no evidence of toxic effects. In clinical studies, intravenous injection of 1 mg/lb/day for five days resulted in no injection site irritation or other side effects. At 15-fold overdose (15 mg/lb/day) for five days one of two horses developed severe laminitis, but no gross lesions or histologic changes were observed. The toxic effects observed in the horses given a 25-fold overdose (25 mg/lb/day) for five days included inappetence, depression, icterus, abdominal swelling and postmortem findings of gastritis, nephritis and hepatitis. INDICATION KETOFEN (R) (ketoprofen) is recommended for the alleviation of inflammation and pain associated with musculoskeletal disorders in the horse. ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE The recommended dosage is 1 mg/lb (1 mL/100 lbs) of body weight once daily. Treatment is administered by intravenous injection and may be repeated for up to five days. Onset of activity is within two hours with peak response by 12 hours. CONTRAINDICATIONS There are no known contraindications to this drug when used as directed. Indications: EQUIOXX is indicated for the control of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in horses. Dosage and Administration: EQUIOXX Tablets can be used at a dosage of 0.045 mg/lb (0.1 mg/kg) body weight for up to an additional 9 days of treatment. Prednisone Tablets Corticosteroids are hormones used for the treatment of multiple conditions including adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease); inflammation; autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, pemphigus, and some anemias; allergies including atopy; asthma; some cancers; and certain types of colitis and kidney diseases (nephrotic syndrome). Dose and Administration: Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your veterinarian. If you have difficulties giving the medication, contact your veterinarian. Dosage depends on the product used. Your veterinarian may recommend starting at a higher dose and then reducing the dose every few days to a week. If using the transdermal gel, apply to the skin as directed by your veterinarian. If using an injectable form, use a new, sterile needle and syringe each time, and follow the proper technique, as directed by your veterinarian. Dispose of the needle and syringe according to local regulations. If you miss a dose, contact your veterinarian to determine the next dose.
