Earthdog Competition

Earthdog Trials – The Scoop

The purpose of non-competition Earthdog tests is to offer breeders and owners of go-to-ground small terriers and Dachshunds a standardized gauge to measure their dogs' natural and trained hunting and working abilities when exposed to a hunting situation.

This noncompetitive program begins with a basic introduction to den work and quarry. It progresses through gradual steps, requiring the dog to be trained to follow game to ground and to work its quarry, showing interest by digging, scratching and barking. The quarry (game) is either two adult rats, which are caged and protected from the dogs, or an artificial quarry. Artificial quarry is placed behind a barrier, properly scented, and capable of movement.

Dogs must be at least six months old in order to enter. Classes include Introduction to Quarry (non-regular with no credit toward titles), Junior Earthdog, Senior Earthdog and Master Earthdog. Dogs are run in pairs and evaluated according to attitude and skill.
