From wildfires to hurricanes to earthquakes, we seem to be seeing more terrifying acts of Mother Nature than ever before. Along with the devastation they cause to structures and people, animals are often left behind, go missing, or worse. Dog.com recently caught up with Elizabeth Jones, who runs to these natural disasters, putting herself at risk every single time, just to save animals.
I started rescuing animals with my mom as a kid. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania in what most people would consider the boondocks. Being that our house was located between a few farms, it was not uncommon for people to dump dogs on adjacent properties or for us to stumble upon animals who needed help being reunited with their paw-rents. Those experiences fueled my passion to help animals.
Years later, I volunteered with a local animal shelter in Philadelphia and got a greater understanding of the desperate need for assistance in the rescue world. Then I moved to Miami, where I started fostering cats and volunteering with local rescue organizations there. I've since fostered and rescued hundreds of individuals, ranging from cows to cats.
