My Littermaid finally broke after 3 years. Pretty good lifespan I think. Decided to go with the Smartscoop for the obvious design flaws with the littermaid. The smartscoop is more of a pooper-flicker. I have more urine balls and fecal balls on the outside of the box than in the box. When it scoops across the sand it doesnt even spread it out. It gets clumps stuck behind the rake or pushes it all to the end a skips over it when it's supposed to be dumping it. That is when it doesn't fling it out of the box. The dump bin is way smaller than the littermaid. I am supposed to be getting the "updrade" with a stronger motor and better rake but I can't see how those two items will improve the flaws. So far I'm cleaning a litterbox that might as well not be automatic at all.
Pros: quieter than littermaid
track and motor outside box
Cons: Flicks poo and pee outside
doesn't rake flat
catches poo/pee behind rake
doesnt pick up all debris
poobin too small for 2 cats
I will be going back to the littermaid- with all it's flaws it is still a better product.

Read the reviews and tried it anyway as it was cheap {under 90}. It has all the problems discribed, except mine has not shut down yet. Use a fast clumping litter helps.
It kicks some out the ramp end so I eliminated the ramp and installed a plastic shield much {6inch} higher behind the factory one. helps. Invest in a better unit.

This litter box is really just as much work as a regular one. It shuts off constantly throughout the day and has to be reset. It jams almost on a daily basis, and it doesn't pick up all the clumps. It was the cheapest automatic box at the store, and I now I know why. I went out of town the weekend after I got it, and I came home to the biggest mess I have ever had to deal with. It had jammed probably the first day I was gone and litter and clumps were everywhere. Don't waste your money on this.

Sometimes I just turn it off and go manual for a few days. In the three months that I hav had it, I worked once correctly for 24 hours. My cat usually hits the corner which makes things a little harder for this machine. Clumping is not the problem. Most days the machine just gets stuck and turns off and although about half of the waste gets cleared, the other half is done manually the next morning. About once a month it get jammed and you have to take it apart - No support from SmartScoop. If someone is careing for you cat(s) while your away, forget about it and get some carboard boxes and litter. This thing will confuse most people who are not use to its small little problems.
