Something Changed, 4/17/2011

Gary S. from Brunswick, Me

our lab was brought up on Eukanuba. Eukanuba is the food that the breeder uses for all her dogs. We started with the puppy blend and eventually graduated him to Eukanuba Retriever Food. All was good until Eukanuba started having trouble supplying its food to the market last year. we stayed with them and traveled to find his retriever blend. We started purchasing his Retriver food at our local Petco when "production was back to normal". At that time Riley started having "issues" with his food. He would literally back away from his bowl and refuse to eat it, ears down, and a "pained" look on his face. We returned a number of bags as he refused to eat from any of them. Who ever heard of a Lab refusing to eat?! We took him to the vet for a check-up, complete blood work, urine analysis, and stool analysis. All his test came back normal or better. There is absolutely nothing medically wrong with him. The vet has always been amazed at how shiny is coat is, how perfect his teeth are, how strong his muscular and skeletal systems are, and how intelligent he is. He has only had Eukanuba, No table scrapes or "human food" for 4 years! The vet said that there must be "something different" about the "new" Eukanuba, and that we should consider changing his diet. With a great deal of skepticism we changed food and started to mix it with the Eukanuba to wean him on to the new food. He would approach is bowl and back away, refusing to eat it. Now we really thought we had a problem..he won't eat at all! So we just gave him a bowl of 100% of the "new" brand..."convinced him to come over to his bowl. He proceeded to eat like the boy he use to be. We tried once more 2 weeks later to see if he would eat the Eukanua Retiever food...he came over to his bowl expecting the "new" brand and immediately backed away!!! We have talked to Eukanuba on numerous occasions, asking them if anything had been "changed" in or to their formula and have been reassured that nothing had changed. We sent them samples from the bags that he refused to eat for their analysis and they have even sent us a numerous coupons for free bags of food. Riley still refuses to eat the Eukanuba Retriever Blend and is happily eating his "new" brand like the "old" Riley. I'm not sure what happened but would hope that Eukanuba would truly take a look at its product and communicate any "changes" they make. Obviously, "new and improved" is not always the case for all dogs.
