Why did you choose this? Store
I have this cage for my current Chinchilla. It is wonderful. I just adopted two more Chinny's and they need their own space. This is the best price I have seen for this great cage!

Is this product suitable for hamsters?
Daniel on Dec 10, 2015
Best Answer: Yes, in that the hamsters can't escape through the wires
Yes, if you have or want more hamsters than you can count at once
No, the plastic can be too easily chewed
No, the cage doors are too high over the ground - a hamster could run over the edge and fall 3 feet to the ground.

Does this cage have 1/2inch bar spancing or 1 inch spacing?
A shopper on Sep 5, 2016
Best Answer: The Critter Nation Small Animal Cage has 1/2" bar spacing. This is a wonderful cage for your Rat friends to live. The double door front opens the entire front of the cage for easy access for cleaning or for easily reaching and playing with your friends. I highly recommend this cage.

Does this cage have a deep plastic tray? The reason I need a new cage is because my rat made a hole in her tray. If this has a tray, please tell me
Makenzie R on Jun 13, 2016
Best Answer: Hi Makenzie,

This cage does have a tray; however, it's not very deep. I don't have the measurements of it on me at the moment, but it can't be anymore than about an inch. It's very shallow.
I bought a big cement mixing bucket/tray and issued that so my babies don't kick their litter everywhere.

So yes, this cage does come with a tray (and has extra trays available for purchase) but it is very shallow.

Hope this helped! :)

I see there are plastic components to this cage. Are the wires sturdy enough to withstand chewing from two adult rats?
Shayla H on Apr 10, 2016
Best Answer: The wires, or cage walls are definitely durable enough to stand up to rats. The cage floor/ trays which are removable for washing are definitely chewable but also cheaply replaceable once they get chewed down. If you go the fleece route with your bedding bull dog clips used around the edges to hold the fleece down (especially in the corners) can be some what of a deterrent for chew happy rats. Youtube has a vast resource for Critter Nation owners with tips for everything from maintenance - decoration. Hope that helps!

Is this a DOUBLE unit (2 stories)?
A shopper on Jun 13, 2016
Best Answer: Yes, it's a double. You can close them off to make two seperate units. I'm doing that right now to keep boys and girls seperate. I've had mine for two years now, and contemplating getting another one because it's lived up to my expectations.

But anywho, yes, it's two levels that can be seperate by raising the ladder and latching it.

could these be used for bunnies?
Carolyn L on Feb 12, 2016
Best Answer: I use it for ratties on top and bunny on bottom (ramp between levels closed). Have to zip tie the bottom ramp that goes to floor so it's stable. He could probably get in and out without it but he does use it. He roams during day and gets locked up at night. One level (maybe even 2) isn't huge for 1 mini lop to be contained all the time. Might want to check some sources on area needed per rabbit, and figure in number and size of bunnies.

How many rats would fit in the double comfortably? i currently have 6 in two cages and about to get two more. i want to house them all the same once i get them introduced and used to eachother
JaeLynn K on Sep 8, 2016
Best Answer: Nice to meet another rat person. I think you should be just fine with 8 adult rats in a DCN. The rule of thumb for a critter nation is 6 per unit. Theoretically you could put 12 in a double. But I'm sure you know, that the more room the better. I would also look at the personalities of your rats and how much room they use now in their current cage. I know for my girls, having 5 in a double was super roomy but they were young, and being female, quite active. The good thing is if you do need more room you can always put an addition on to your double unit.

Is this cage appropriate for a rabbit? I have a holland lop
A shopper on Sep 7, 2016
Best Answer: Some people do use these for rabbits, however I personally would not use them for a rabbit. Rabbits ideally should have much more horizontal space to binky and run, and the ramps would be awkward for most rabbits to use, particularly between levels. I recently rescued a tiny Holland lop who was kept in a cage like this and badly broke one of his hind legs while in the cage. They are not sure entirely how it happened, but guessed it was either in a fall from one platform to the next or by getting his paw caught in one of the ramps when going down them (or falling from one).

A 4x4' x-pen, custom C&C pen/cage, or XL dog kennel is much better for even small rabbit breeds like Holland lops.

Is this appropriate for rabbits?
Cam M on Jun 23, 2016
Best Answer: Perhaps yes, but it would need some modifications. The space is adequate for one rabbit - however rabbits like some access to an enclosed areas inside a hutch, so you would need to cover at least part of one level or insert a built-in box. Also - most traditional rabbit hutches allow for their droppings to fall through on the ground below. The floors of these units are of a solid material (which means constantly having to clean out the droppings or remove and replace any added bedding material). Also consider - rabbits are best in a larger horizontal space and don't really need a 2-story cage. My Recommendation: If you already have one of these cages, you could use it with some modifications. If you are looking to buy - a traditional "rabbit hutch" would be better.

Could I use this cage for sugar gliders?
Meaghan W on Jun 3, 2016
Best Answer: Yes you can! I put the tray on the bottom shelf underneath so they can't reach food. I also took all platforms out and didn't include the center wire and tray so the whole cage is open for better acrobatics. Highly recommended!!!
