After a disappointing experience with a cheap dog whistle, I decided to try the "gold standard" Acme dog whistle. Although it is a little pricey, I'm glad I did. I was having trouble getting my dog to respond to me while outside, off-leash if he got distracted. I didn't want to use a regular-type whistle that would be heard for blocks. This silent whistle has been a good solution. (Although the whistle does emit a high-pitched sound that is audible to people within a few feet of it, your neighbors shouldn't notice it.) I started indoors and my dog instantly responded to the sound. Once I determined his response was reliable, we moved outdoors. He typically responds to it by running to me immediately, unlike before. We have only used it for near distances of a few hundred feet so far, so I can't say how well he would respond within the advertised hearing distance of three to four miles.

I was pleased by the all metal construction and the cover. I like that you can set the pitch of the whistle for long distance etc. This whistle gets all four of my dogs attention quite well. Of course I used the whistle in conjunction with great treats at first to get a recall. I started in the house with minimal distractions and worked my way outside with it. I haven't had to test the whistle over long distances yet while the dogs are off leash. They respond more quickly to the whistle for recall than calling their name. The whistle makes a small amount of noise that is audible to the human ear. The noise is not unpleasant and I am sure that the dogs hear it much louder than we can. Overall I am very pleased with this whistle and so are all four of my dogs.
