Every October is Adopt a Dog Month. The American Humane Association dedicates the month to making people more aware of the overabundance of shelter dogs in the US and how they can help.

There are many misconceptions about the types of dogs found in shelters and the need for them to find a good furrever home. Often, people mistakenly assume shelter dogs are there because they are not friendly and won’t  make a good pet. That isn't the case. The truth is there are many reasons why dogs end up in shelters. For example, the dog could have been rescued from an abusive home or its previous owner simply couldn't afford to take care of it anymore. In recent years when families had to downsize and move into an apartment, they have no choice but to give up their dogs as well. As you can see, there is a great need for finding a forever home for many wonderful and loving pets.
There are several ways you can help out this month. If you are looking for a dog, start visiting local shelters or online pet organizations with profiles of dogs up for adoption and in need of a home. Also, spreading the word about adopting a dog as opposed to buying one can help inform friends and family who may be looking for one. Show your support for the cause whenever you can and let your others know how they can help.

If you have the time, animal shelters are always in need of volunteers. One of the best ways to keep dogs social and in good health is by having them stay with a family until a permanent home is found for them. If you have the room and desire to help in the short term, fostering can be a great experience for a dog. Animal shelters are also always in need of donations either in the form of food and supplies or a monetary donation.

There are so many good things a dog can offer like companionship and unwavering loyalty just for starters. Having a dog grow up with your children gives them a gift of unconditional love and a respect for animals. Many people adopt a dog as a companion for themselves, so that they have someone to talk to at night, for example. Pets bring energy and happiness to an otherwise quite home.

Shelter dogs are dogs that need a second chance at a good home and are just looking for someone to love. Keep them in mind for the month of October.
